  • The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) Exams

  • Advanced Placement (AP) Music Theory

What are the benefits of participating in music exams?

  1. Set goals and track your progress. Exams offer a clear roadmap for your musical journey. By working towards an exam, you can see your progress and celebrate when you achieve your goals.

  2. Improve your technique and musicianship. Exams test several areas of musicianship: technique, ear training, sight reading, music theory, and musical understanding. By preparing for an exam, you focus on specific areas of musical development and work on improving your skills.

  3. Enhance your resume and stand out to universities and employers. If you're planning on pursuing a career in music, having exam qualifications on your resume can set you apart from other applicants. Even if you don’t plan to pursue a career in music, including your exam achievements on your college application can show dedication and commitment to a craft over several years.

  4. Increase confidence and motivation. Preparing for exams can be a great motivator — especially when you see your progress over time. Plus, when you have something to prepare for, you are more likely to practice consistently!
